A light rain drifted from the dark grey afternoon sky as a
man in a crumpled brown suit approached Stan through the chaos of cursing
paramedics and the screaming wounded. Police cruisers and emergency vehicles
surround the front of the S-mart shopping complex sealing it off from the
public. The man in brown was homicide detective Daniel Gant. A craggy faced ten
year veteran who had seen it all, but this incident left a bad taste in his
mouth. Beneath the eaves of the shopping center Stan shivered under the rough
blanket the paramedics had wrapped around him. He tried to make sense of what
he had witnessed a few short moments ago. The tension still gripped him. Gant stopped
and stared, "I'm detective Gant" he said abruptly as he flashed his
badge, he then produced a pen and pad from his coat. "I just need you to
tell me exactly what happened". Ice blue eyes locked onto Stan's soft
featured face. ”Ok” Stan replied unsure of what to say. "So, what do you
know about him?" Gant asked gesturing towards a blood spattered man being
led to an unmarked car by two burly officers. He was heavily built with jet
black hair and an odd prosthetic hand that looked like a gauntlet. "Who,
Ash?" Stan muttered, he ran his
fingers nervously through thinning brown hair. "Well I started here about
a week ago" revealing the trainee badge on his light blue S-mart smock. "So all I can really say is that he seemed normal” he paused. “Well,
except for his hand". "Yes, I noticed" Gant stated “Alright,
start from the top" Gant stared at Stan readying his pen for the
onslaught. "Tell me everything ". Stan took a deep breath, exhaled
sharply then began.
The store was in the midst of a blue light special that
week; customers were milling about the main thoroughfare that ran from one end
of the store to the other. In Stan’s area, the housewares section, they idly
chatted while perusing the deals. Easy listening music wafted through the store
giving a sense of being in a colossal, well lit elevator. That morning Stan had
been given the task of restocking the personal grooming aisle. As he was
placing electric razors on the shelf he turned to see Ash at the far end of the
aisle nonchalantly talking to an elderly man, "why it's just to the right
and two aisles over, sir" Ash said, pointing the way with his metal hand.
"Thank you son" the elderly man replied. “Shop smart, shop
s-mart" Ash finished and gave a wide grin. Stan felt it was just a
bullshit cheesy line but Ash seemed to genuinely enjoy saying it, maybe just to
bug customers he thought.
Stan placed the price on the finished display when he heard
a sharp buzzing sound suddenly emanating from the overhead lighting, a cold
sensation ran down his spine. He shuddered and looked around, just customers,
and Ash, who now wore a look of dread concern. The lights flickered erratically.
A bead of cold sweat formed on Stan’s brow, he turned to look down the aisle,
when the lights flickered then dimmed. Suddenly a piercing scream was heard and
then the sound of scrambling feet followed by a strange wet ripping noise, he
stood bolt upright and saw customers in a frenzied scramble to get out,
knocking over stands and crashing into one another in the flashing light. He
felt a surge of panic as he saw Ash sprinting headlong towards sporting goods,
instinctively he followed. Moving out of his aisle he stopped almost stumbling
on a dismembered arm that lay on the floor, blood pooling around the stump.
Retching from the smell of blood he then saw pieces of what looked to be torso.
He moved behind the counter near Ash. "Godammed sonovabitch!" Ash
exclaimed as he smashed open a cabinet containing hunting rifles. Seeing Stan,
Ash yelled “watch the counter!” as he released a lever action rifle from the
case. Stan did as he was told, his heart hammering in his chest as he poked his
head over the counters edge to see a woman in the dim light. It looked like she
was helping someone up. The lights flickered on and Stan saw the red meat
dangling from her claw-like hands and the grimace on her contorted face. “Hey
ugly! I’m afraid you will have to leave the store, Bitch!” Ash yelled. A hoarse
inhuman scream came from the woman as she made to charge the counter, then an
explosion. The lights flickered, the woman’s head vaporised as the bullet from
Ash’s rifle found its mark. “Move!!” screamed Ash as he fired again. Stan
couldn’t move, Ash grabbed him and hauled him up. “Get to the godammed
exit!” A figure rose up in front of the
counter only to be cut down by Ash’s rifle. “Say hi to disco for me!” Ash
bellowed at the now headless thing. Stan saw another, this time clearly, the
face bloated and rotten, the features twisted into a terrible mask. Ash fired again hitting it in the chest; it
moved, only to receive another salvo to the gut nearly cutting it in two. Black
blood sprayed everywhere. The lights
went out completely. The only sources of light were the muzzle flashes from the
rifle and the faint glow from the distant exit. “Come on you Deadite Fuckers!”
Ash thundered as he fired again. “The exit!” Ash yelled. Stan moved like never
before while Ash decimated those creatures behind him. Just as he reached the
door he heard a sound, a low guttural growl followed by “we will devour your
soul”. The dull light from outside was a relief as he broke into the car park.
"That's about it, then you guys arrived, Holy
shit". Stan said. Gant closed his notepad. "Ok, we are done for
now" he said. Turning away Gant stopped as another officer approached him
with a wild look in his eyes. He was shouting hysterically about a massacre happening
all over town as gunshots and screams overtook his ranting’s. Everything went
berserk. Hundreds of those things were now in the car park killing everything
in their path. A car suddenly screeched to a halt in front of Gant and Stan.
Ash was driving. “Get in or die! Your choice” He yelled. He had somehow subdued
the officers and stolen their cruiser. Giving no thought to the situation they
both sprang into the car as it sped off. Ash turned to his passengers “looks
like this might be the end fellas” Grinning he turned back and drove.
To be continued?

Hi Vince! Wow, just wow! Normally this is not the sort of thing I would ever attempt to read but I loved that! I really like the way you wrote in, in that you managed to convey the past tense but made the reader feel like they were actually in Stan's shoes. It's a shame we were limited to such a small word count because I want to know more! Why and how did Ash know what to do? I really enjoyed that. Really well written nice job!
ReplyDeleteOh and side note, I love the title too!
ReplyDeleteHey Vince, I loved reading your Fanfic! I agree with Bella, such a shame that you have a restriction on your word count!!! I want to read more, made me sit on the edge of my seat! Well done sir! Hats off to you~!
